Quinn detailed his budget package to lawmakers during a joint session of the legislature on Wednesday.

The budget contains a fifty percent hike in the income tax for individuals and families that meet certain income thresholds.

“Much of any federal tax relief that families will see will be more than swallowed up by this type of increase,” said Eddy. “This proposal adds up to over $7 billion taken out of the economy at a time when we need economic development that results in job creation.

“I have a record of opposing tax hikes on working families, and I’m certainly concerned by the Governor’s proposals to raise taxes so high so soon,” Eddy said. “The state is in a disastrous mess financially due to years of irresponsible budget practices by the Democratic majority.

“I think it is important to keep an open mind as we face down some of the biggest fiscal challenges in the state’s history,” Eddy said.

“But this fifty percent increase in income taxes being proposed coupled with more proposed pension raids seems to be more of the same rather than the responsible approach that we need so desperately.”

Quinn’s budget proposal also maps out a strategy to pass a long awaited capital bill that he says will create jobs and improve infrastructure. “We have not had a capital plan to build new schools, improve roads, bridges and other necessary infrastructure in a decade,” Eddy said.

“The devil will certainly be in the details in a plan as large as the Governor is proposing,” Eddy said.

“For now I think the most prudent approach is to wait and see exactly what the budget contains, and go line by line to identify places where the budget can be cut before raising taxes on working people.”

Blagojevich Closes State Parks
The bulk of the state-wide closings appear to clearly target Republican State Senate districts, this after attempts to close state corrections facilities in solid republican districts failed dramatically for Blagojevich from an embrace of grassroots local support.

Please contact your local legislators to voice your feelings and thoughts on the closure of these facilities. Please also contact the Offie of the Governor to strenghten the opposition to these closings.
